Silver Infocomm Initiative

The Silver Infocomm Initiative aims to bridge the digital divide among senior citizens aged 50 and above through addressing their differences in educational background, language and infocomm competencies. Senior citizens can obtain training in digital lifestyle skills and get engaged in the digital age.

Silver Infocomm Junctions

Twelve senior-friendly and conveniently located IT learning hubs, called Silver Infocomm Junctions (SIJs), are set up island-wide. The SIJs offer affordable infocomm training and customised curriculum for senior citizens. Senior citizens are also able to enjoy follow up tutorials for more in-depth learning.

The SIJs are established at the following locations

Silver Infocomm Hotspots

IDA will be setting up 100 Silver Infocomm Hotspots (SIHs) to provide access to computers and internet services for senior citizens free-of-charge. The SIHs will be set up at accessible locations for senior citizens island-wide such as Community Centres, Senior Citizen Connect areas or Clans and Society buildings. The 100 SIHs are targeted to be deployed by March 2013.

Locations of the SIJs and SIHs can be found on OneMap.

Silver Infocomm Day

The Silver Infocomm Day Series is an annual event where IDA works jointly with industry and community to enrich the infocomm learning experience of senior citizens. From 2007, more than 19,000 senior citizens had attended the 3-in-1 event (talks, exhibition and hands-on training) featuring the latest in infocomm lifestyle trends.

Silver Infocomm Curriculum

Besides setting up infocomm access facilities & offering training, IDA also developed a set of IT skills curriculum to increase infocomm literacy among senior citizens. There are two tracks, iBEGIN and iLIVE, for senior citizens to learn basic infocomm usage and digital lifestyle skills respectively.

iBEGIN modules guide senior citizens on basic infocomm activities such as how to use a computer, surf the Internet, create an email or instant messaging account, as well as protect themselves online with infocomm security tips. iBEGIN also teaches senior citizens how to make video calls using the Internet. The iLIVE track offers intermediate skill users lifestyle-related infocomm modules. For instance, senior citizens can learn how to make online transactions, such as the booking of air tickets and editing of digital photos.

The courseware booklets for every participant are presented in a step-by-step, comprehensive format, in English and Chinese versions. Currently the Silver Infocomm Initiative Curriculum covers a variety of 12 topics:

  • Basic Computer and Internet
  • e-Communications
  • Basic Computer (Win 7)
  • Internet
  • e-Travel
