The Proof-of-Concept (POC) lab presents the following technologies:
Biometrics is the automatic identification of a person based on physiological or behavioural traits. Biometrics delivers verification data that cannot be lost, stolen or forgotten. As well as fingerprint recognition, biometrics can use hand geometry, voice recognition, retina scanning, signature verification, face recognition or even a combination of these. DNA identification may also be possible.
High speed Wireless LAN (11 Mbps) features bandwidth capable of streaming multimedia content and is sufficient for most Internet services. With security up to 128 bits encryption, data can be protected from unauthorised users. Its spread spectrum is less susceptible to interference and as it allows seamless roaming between access points.
Voice over Internet or Internet Telephony is available through Internet Telephony Service Providers. Though only used for making outgoing telephone calls, it is driven by the great cost savings it makes possible because voice reproduction is based on best effort.
Yet to be deployed is VoIP for the Enterprise. In the workspace, this can deliver integrated applications to enhance communications and productivity and allows voice, video telephony, collaborative conferencing and more.
ACE leverages an existing IT infrastructure to enable authorised users to have secure access to corporate resources from anywhere, at any time using any device. Security is ensured by using two-factor authentication. It allows better, faster and easier remote computing. No software client installation is required and it will run on existing hardware seamlessly without application rewrites.
Mporium is a proof-of-concept project, illustrating a hypothetical comparison shopping service accessible on-the-move, using WAP-enabled devices. Comparison shopping is not a new e-commerce service; there are existing Internet sites that allow consumers to search for the prices offered by different shops for the same merchandise item, so that they can go for the cheapest price. Mporium seeks to take comparison shopping away from the desktop, so that its advantages can extend to being truly anytime, anywhere. This anytime-anywhere comparison shopping concept can be extended to more retailers, for larger breadth of search, and to merchandise other than books (e.g. using barcode numbers).
Mployee is a working mobile-accessible staff directory for IDA. Implemented using the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), it allows on-the-move lookup of any staff member's department name, telephone number, fax number and email address, by searching on full/partial names.
