Wi-Fi networks are becoming ubiquitous within enterprises. They can carry not just data and voice traffic but also provide location information of users in the networks. Enterprises can leverage on their existing Wi-Fi networks and use suitable location engines to provide Location Based Services (LBS) to their users. LBS is one of the key enabler technologies that IDA is betting on.

One such Wi-Fi software location engine was assessed and showcased by IDA in its Proof of Concept Lab Version 4. The location engine technology was able to provide accuracy of 1 to 2 metres on average in an indoor environment. The technology will have useful applications for enterprise, tourism and security sectors.
IDA and Singapore Science Centre (SSC) saw the potential of a location-based multimedia tour guide application will benefit science centres and museums to enhance their visitor's experience. ScienceAlive is a joint project to provide a location-based educational solution implemented on Wi-Fi enabled Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) that streams multimedia narration of exhibits, alerts visitors for shows and helps visitors to navigate around in the centre. It aims to enhance visitors experience and inject fun into learning though quizzes and games.
The ScienceAlive system was officially
launched at the Singapore Science Centre on 13 June 2005.
