Mobile OSA/Parlay Testbed Initiative

OSA/Parlay is a set of standard APIs jointly developed by 3GPP, ESTI and the Parlay group to enable telecom service creation. By abstracting the complexity of the underlying network, the OSA/Parlay interface opens up new communication service opportunities to IT software developers who may have little telecom knowledge. IT developers can potentially "telecom-enable" their existing IT, enterprise or Web services applications, allowing for a new class of hybrid telecom/IT communication services that integrate both voice and data to emerge.

In order to increase the awareness of the OSA/Parlay technology, IDA co-organised a one-day seminar with CrimsonLogic. On 27 June 2003, five distinguished speakers from the standards bodies, vendors and research institutes were invited to share their knowledge and experience at CrimsonLogic's premises.

The five speakers were:

  • Zygmunt Lozinski - President, Parlay Group & Senior Technical Staff Member, IBM
  • Marc Leclerc - Chairman, Marketing Committee, Parlay Group & Service Layer Business Advocate, Ericsson
  • Thomas Magedanz (PhD) - Head of the "3Gbeyond" division at Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, Germany
  • Peter Karlsson - Technology Evanglist, Sun Microsystems
  • Michael Ross - Vice President, jNETx

In addition, IDA offered to fund an OSA/Parlay test bed in Singapore and invited industry players to submit proposals. However, after reviewing all the proposals submitted and with much deliberation, IDA decided not to proceed with the funding of the Open Service Access/Parlay Test Bed Trial.

IDA would like to thank all the Consortium Leads and their Technology Partners for their support in this initiative. While the conditions may not be ripe for the launch of an industry-wide test bed, IDA may still consider funding of specific inter-company collaboration to promote the adoption of OSA/Parlay Technology.
