Government Web Excellence Awards

Posted date: 5 October 2009

User voting is underway for the inaugural Government Web Excellence Awards (WEA), which will give recognition to good government websites and the adoption of web standards and best practices.

Today, Singapore Government agency websites have matured into informative and service-focused portals, thanks to past and existing government initiatives to modernise the public service through various e-Government programmes and industry collaborations.

To encourage continued progress, the government needs to strengthen its focus towards establishing a more user-centric, citizen-focused online presence. This is necessary given the growing pervasiveness of the Internet, resulting in increasing user expectations in quality of information and delivery of e-services.

The awards give recognition to good government websites and the adoption of web standards and best practices.

WEA was conceptualised in October 2008 at the iGov Council, which is the highest decision-making authority on government infocomm in Singapore.

One of the aims of WEA is to encourage government agencies to improve their websites and view this as a continuous process driven by a focus on the customer and aligned to web standards that have been identified across government agencies.

For members of the public, it is hoped that WEA will spur agencies to improve the clarity and usefulness of their online information, as well the user-friendliness of their sites and the associated e-services.

For the Singapore Government, WEA will provide a platform for showcasing and promoting Singapore’s e-Government and infocomm websites and e-services, and also reinforce the Singapore government’s online brand.

By recognising best-in-class government websites, WEA will also help to promote the adoption of Web Publishing Best Practices and standards to ensure quality in the delivery of online information and services.

Users can vote for their favourite government website by visiting www.WebAwards.gov.sg, and stand to win attractive prizes. Voting ends on 31 October 2009. The results will form part of the evaluation to decide the winning government agency websites.
