Mr Vignesa Moorthy: We hope to bring Singapore's connectivity infrastructure to the next level. |
Facilities-based operator and managed services provider Viewqwest has announced that it will invest S$8 million in infrastructure as it positions itself as an Operating Company (OpCo) for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN).
The Next Gen NBN initiative is aimed at connecting homes and offices to a nationwide ultra high-speed network by 2012, as part of Singapore’s Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015) master plan.
The basic fibre infrastructure is being rolled out by the Network Company OpenNet, while OpCos provide services such as wholesale broadband connectivity to downstream operators such as retail service providers (RSPs). The RSPs will then package and sell broadband services to end-users.
Viewqwest, a member of the Comcraft Group which has an annual turnover of US$5 billion, is looking to offer connectivity via its Fibernet solution, which it describes as a cost-effective next-generation fibre optic to Ethernet network technology which supports symmetrical link speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps. This will allow organisations to deliver more creative and useful applications such as video conferencing, video streaming and other multimedia applications with better quality.
"We hope to bring Singapore's connectivity infrastructure to the next level. Today almost 80 per cent of households have broadband access and companies are looking to improve productivity and efficiency," said Mr Vignesa Moorthy, Chief Executive Officer, Viewqwest. "We see this as a well-spent investment and strongly believe technology can enrich one's life."
Viewqwest said it plans to invest another S$15 million over the next two years as part of the ongoing efforts to build up infrastructure, which will allow it to cater to more companies islandwide. It is currently focused on providing Next Gen NBN solutions to organisations but has plans to roll out ultra-high speed connections to individual consumers soon.
