The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) was one of nine organisations to be conferred the IDC-Enterprise Innovation Award 2010 on 29 July 2010, during the Singapore leg of IDC's Asia/Pacific CIO Summit 2010.
Given that this was the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, SYOGOC had the challenging task of establishing service levels and standards with the International Olympic Council (IOC) and the International Federation for new competition formats and rules, and plan for a Culture and Education Programme targeted primarily at young athletes. This had to be done within a timeframe of 2.5 years, compared to the four to six years that an Olympic Games host city typically gets to prepare the event.
To deliver a truly memorable and meaningful Games for the athletes, SYOGOC designed creative architectural solutions to optimise the infrastructure and services, streamlined business processes and developed novel end-to-end testing strategies to compress work that typically takes more than 12 months into a six-month timeframe.
To appeal to the youth, new media was deployed extensively on the various Singapore 2010 websites; Singapore 2010 Odyssey, an interactive, 3D environment for learning about Singapore 2010; the Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010; and the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (LIVE), in which the torch is tracked using a Geographical Positioning System during the Singapore leg of the flame relay. During the Games, the websites generated more than 2.3 million views while the YouTube channels garnered 7 million views (as at 29 August).
One of the unique features of the first YOG was the “Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010” service, which offered athletes and officials concierge-style services as well as facts and information relating to Singapore. This initiative was the result of a collaboration between the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, SYOGOC and partners Samsung and SingTel.
Ms Lim Bee Kwan, Director, Technology for SYOGOC who received the IDC award on behalf of the team, said the award was a recognition for the two and a half years of hard work put in by SYOGOC’s Technology division in delivering world class ICT infrastructure and services for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. “Together with our IT partners, we have played a crucial role in delivering the services that have ensured a successful Games,”
she said.
