Mobile World Congress
Mobile World Congress 2010 was held in Barcelona from 15 to 18 February 2010.

A mobile service that integrates social networking, communication tools and multiplayer gaming; a service creation platform which allows telcos to introduce new applications without incurring high operational and capital expenditure – these were some of the innovative products showcased by Singapore companies at the recent Mobile World Congress. The global conference on mobile technology was held in Barcelona from 15 to 18 February 2010.

A delegation of nine Singapore companies took part in the event, led by the Singapore Manufacturer’s Federation and supported by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and International Enterprise (IE) Singapore.

Among them was hSenid Mobile, which launched its carrier-grade service delivery platform mChoice SDP at the show. Through the use of application creation wizards, the platform enables telcos to deploy new messaging and content services faster, more simply, consistently and at lower cost.

“The Singapore Pavilion is a great way for us to showcase our products and services at the Mobile World Congress,” said hSenid Mobile’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Dinesh Saparamadu. “This is the largest gathering of mobile industry executives, decision makers, and operators from all over the world. It is a global event, and gives us access to the global market.”

Also making its debut at the Mobile World Congress was the award-winning Mozat, a social networking service (SNS) platform and service tailored for the most popular mobile phones. For consumers, Mozat serves as a mobile social community that allows users to connect, interact and socialise with each other. It provides them with access to email, instant messaging, photo sharing, chat rooms and multiplayer gaming. For mobile operators, Mozat provides a flexible, market-ready Mobile SNS platform that drives data usage, builds customer loyalty and extends exciting value-added services offerings for their subscribers.

Other companies exhibiting in the Singapore pavilion included Fixed and Mobile, i-Pop Networks, Mobile Advertising Exchange, Muvee Technologies, Roam Over IP, Tencube and Utiba.

Mr Andrew Khaw, Senior Director of Industry Development at IDA, said Singapore’s representation at the Mobile World Congress will help companies with innovative solutions to expand their overseas reach, especially into sophisticated markets such as Europe.

He noted that Singapore’s high mobile penetration rate of 131 per cent is an indicator of the potential in the provision of value-added mobile services beyond the traditional offerings, and that Singapore-based companies have come up with innovative mobile services to meet
these demands.

Examples include WaveSecure – a mobile security suite that provides for remote control; muvee Reveal – a video editing software that creates video from photos, video and music; and TransferToTM – a global airtime remittance network – all of which have been successfully deployed and used in Singapore and exported through major international players.

Muvee’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mr Terence Swee said past participation at Mobile World Congress has enabled the company to cement strong relationships with handset makers like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG. The company is a pioneer and leader in automatic video editing software, and its patented technologies are now included in many popular LG phones like the Viewty, Cookie, Arena
and Prada2.

For companies involved in developing mobile applications, volume and the resulting economies of scale are critical to remain profitable, said Mr Thian Tai Chew, Group Director, Infocomm Technology at IE Singapore, which promotes the overseas growth of Singapore-based enterprises and trade. “The domestic market is too small to sustain this industry, and it is hence necessary for us to support our players to participate in international flagship shows and other platforms where they get to meet and sell their solutions to a large audience.”

“Europe is an important market for Singapore mobile technology players because of its high mobile penetration rates, advanced 3G mobile networks and proliferation of high-end smart-phones - factors that create conducive ecosystem for mobile applications and services to flourish,” he added.
